The wick - a little engine that works with wax

As I said in another post, now it is the time to talk about the wick, a little 'engine' that works with another kind of fuel: wax. The wick works on capillarity principle, being very important for a constant flame, without smoke and who gives proper light and also for best burn the wax recipe should be very well handled.

There are a lot of wicks, from models to composition, colors and sizes, so that for every candle producer is very important to find the best wick. Speaking about models, there can be used thin wicks for candles up to 2,5 cm diameter, flat knitted wick whose dimensions vary because of the number of fiber used in its fabrication, metallic-hearted wicks, squared wicks etc.

EcoDecoLight produces candles with a pure cotton wick, treated in fabrication and in the candle making process, by covering with wax and burn preparation, so that it won't burn with toxic compounds in the breathable air.

There must be also an optimal proportion referring to the wick thickness and candle dimensions, so that the burning process is efficient. Increasing the candle's diameter goes to more thickness of the wick. In case of candles that measure over 15 cm in diameter, there must be chosen more wicks, disposed in more than one burning point.

Regarding the quantity of wax used for EcoDecoLight candles, we will set 1, 2 or 3 wicks, with tested special dimensions, in order to get a clean burn. But we also advice that now and then, after some hours of letting the candle burn, blow it, let it cool down and make wick adjustments if it's the case (shorten it). If we had to use self-consumable wicks, it meant to use synthetic substances for its treatment, and our purpose is to produce a completely natural product.

The wick we use is straight an fixed on the support using just wax, it doesn't get right to the end, because we are testing now an ensured self-blow out when the candle gets to the end. This is about candles in glass support with an approx. weight of 200g ('glass' support). We are very pleased of the burning quality because the recipe we use (palm and bees wax, oils, colorants), all natural so Eco, led us to a finel product of very high quality in aspect, color and texture.

Why palm wax candles?

Palm wax is a completely natural compound, a regenerative and renewable resource, obtained with help from palm plantations in SE Asia (Malaysia in our case). Being an environmental free product, this type of wax is one of the most hunted by the candle producers, especially because the final result consists of an exceptional candle. This is the main goal why EcoDecoLight was created.

As a plant, palm tree produces fruits that when the time comes are harvested and sent to the processing centers. Here, the oil is extracted, sterilized and purified in order to obtain a raw palm oil. This substance is then again processed by refineries in order to get products like cooking oil, shortening oil, substitute for cocoa oil, soaps and other non-food products and, of course, palm wax.

Palm wax is an extraordinary product when it's about making high quality candles. These are very resistant at high summer temperatures, mix easily with colors and keep inside very well the aroma of essential oils. A confirmed advantage consists of this: with a carefully controlled pouring temperature, there can be obtained spectacular surface textures, from complex crystalline structures to fine solid colors.

Some of the advantages that a natural palm wax candle, not a paraffin one, can offer, are:

1. It's a 100% natural product, ecologic, with no petrochemical compounds.
2. Palm wax is a renewable resource.
3. Palm wax mixes very good with essential oils and keeps the fragrance for a long time; this is why they can be very well used in aromatherapy, using one or a combination of more calculated aromas.
   
4. The candle does not leak and burns without smoke.
5. Candles burn very well and the time of burning is long.
6. Candles keep their shape and they stay hard, without deformations, even on a hot summer day.
7. The candle is not oily and has a very fine texture.

EcoDecoLighte was born not just like a name suggesting ecologic and/or decorative light. Meaning candles. But from two obsessions: one - the desire to lighten a completely natural candle, two - the need to organize ourselves and to manage own business.

Let's talk about the meaning of "natural candle", Eco candle. It's about using a 100% natural recipe that by burning does not emanate harmful compounds and a pure cotton wick, without any insertion (artificial or metallic).

The market consists of almost 100% 'some-synthetic-compound' candles. All are made from paraffin and synthetic flavors, artificial colors, wicks with metallic insertion... We want a natural product and now we are in production of 100% natural candles, with a recipe based on palm wax, beeswax, palm oil, natural colors and essential oils. Also, as we said before, the wick is also pure cotton.
